Romantic strings at UPS Jacobsen concert

Dvorak, Schumann and Shostakovich are on the menu for romance for the first Jacobsen Series concert at the University of Puget Sound. Featuring Maria Sampen (violin), Timothy Christie (viola), Tanya Stambuk (piano) and a guest cellist, the program includes Shostakovich’s wistful “Romance” which accompanied the film “The Gadfly.” 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10. $12.50/$8.50/free for current Puget Sound students. “The Barber of Seville” comes to Vashon

Vashon Opera kicks off its season with Rossini’s comic masterpiece, “The Barber of Seville.” Cast includes Tacoma Opera faves like Sarah Mattox as Rosina and Ross Hauck as Count Almaviva, plus Vashon local Andrew Krikawa as Figaro. Pecha Kucha at TAM

“Pecha Kucha” means “chit-chat” in Japan, spurred on by evenings of superfast slide presentations by artists and designers. Tacoma’s version of Pecha Kucha continues next week at Tacoma Art Museum on the theme of “Portraits,” featuring presentations by Stephanie Stebich, Marilyn Strickland and more. 5-7 p.m. Sept. 16. ArtWalk: James Hume, ArtBus and more

This month’s third Thursday ArtWalk features site-specific dance on Tollefson Plaza and new Paris-inspired paintings by James Hume at Sandpiper, plus free museums and late-opening galleries. Don’t forget the ArtBus, touring art spots and leaving from the Speakeasy Arts Cooperative at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. ArtWalk 5-8 p.m., Tollefson dance 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 16.
