If you think that golf and glass art have nothing to do with each other, think again. This week the two coincide at the Hotel Murano, the venue for a week-long exhibit by glass artist Taliaferro Jones. Who’s she? Just the daughter of Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the designer for the Chambers Bay golf course which is hosting the Amateur U.S. Open through Sunday.

Toronto-based Taliaferro Jones, a graduate of Tufts and the School at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, has exhibited her glass sculpture and photography internationally, including sculpture biennales in Spain, the Netherlands and South Korea. Her fluid, curvy objects in translucent colors reflect her love of water, and desire to embody its properties in glass.

Says Jones: “When I dive into any body of water I immediately have an intense and profound sense of joy and wonder.  Both water and glass have an amazing ability to reflect and refract light.  Their prismatic qualities display the infinite patterns of nature in exquisite variety.  These reflections illustrate the organic order in nature that is defined by the divine mathematical proportion of the golden mean.”

Jones’ art is on display this week through Aug. 30 on the third floor of the Hotel Murano, Tacoma’s boutique hotel famous for its extensive glass art collection. That Jones’ father has his own design work on view to the crowds attending the Amateur Open isn’t a coincidence. Says spokeswoman Dina Nishioka: “The Murano is thankful to the Jones family for bringing so much richness and art to Tacoma, and loves the opportunity of honoring a fabulous glass artist, such as Taliaferro Jones.”

The Hotel Murano is at 1320 Broadway, Tacoma. www.hotelmuranotacoma.com
