Tacoma has a new ballet studio. Ballet Arts Tacoma started up last weekend with classes on Sundays and Mondays at Urban Grace Church, and more to come in the fall.

The studio is owned and taught by Debi Hays, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dance in London then danced professionally for 13 years with the Deutsche Oper Am Rhein in Duesseldorf, Germany. For the last four years Hays has been ballet director at Elite Dance in Puyallup, and is now heading up her own school. Classes focus on serious ballet students of all ages.

“I really want to educate dancers in the art of ballet,” says Hays, who loves the wooden floors, barre and mirrors in the Urban Grace dance room. “The names of steps, how to execute them, how to be a stronger dancer. It’s like a masterclass: Dancers can come regardless of where they’re dancing at, and still learn something.”

Classes at Ballet Arts Tacoma are 2-3:30 p.m. (8-12 years), 3:30-5 p.m. (13+ years) and 5-6 p.m. pointe class on Sundays; and private lessons 5-9 p.m. Mondays. Drop-in $25/monthly $100/4 classes $80. Private: $60 per hour/$35 per half-hour. Urban Grace Church is located at 902 Market St., Tacoma. Information: 253-441-9502, www.BalletArtsTacoma.com
