Tacoma’s first Art Bike Parade this weekend

Get your art on your bike this weekend for Tacoma’s very first Art Bike Parade! What’s an Art Bike Parade? Well gosh, use your imagination. Participants dress up bicycles, tandems, unicycles, rollerskates, skateboards and anything else self-propelled on wheels, and show off in downtown  Tacoma to hoards of fascinated passers-by. The Parade is on this Saturday evening in conjunction with Tacoma’s first Criterium cycle street race event.

The Tacoma Twilight Criterium is organized by Junefish, Tacoma Bike and the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Commission. Events run from 3-11 p.m.  June 12, and include a kids’ bike race, beer gardens and the Criterium itself, a one-hour closed-circuit street loop around Pacific Avenue where contestants sprint the whole way.

But of course for arty folks the main attraction is the Art Bike Parade at 7:10 p.m., riding from South 8th to South 12th street. Portland has had one for years, and the main goal is to make yourself and your wheels look as groovy as possible. Think paint, costume, structure, concept. There’ll be prizes for the best entries courtesy of the Harmon Hub. It’s free to enter, and bikes can be parked in the Pita Pit parking lot on South 10th Street and Pacific Avenue.

Register for the Parade with Gillian Corke at gillian@junefish.com. More info at www.tacomatwilight.com

For all you other people that aren’t that energetic there is a really nice art show te the Lakewold Gardens in Lakewood put on by the Rainier League of Arts. Classy art in a classy setting. Check it out.
