reevesa001Remember MetalUrge? The city-wide celebration of all things metal lasted through summer and ranged from gallery shows to live aluminum pouring in Tollefson Plaza. Well, one unexpected offshoot of MetalUrge is that a local metal artist has set up permanent shop on St. Helens Avenue, offering sales, shows and classes.

Amy Reeves, who teaches metalwork at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle and MetroParks in Tacoma, as well as up and down the West Coast, was inspired by the interest in MetalUrge to have a permanent home in Tacoma.

Says Reeves: “I have been thinking about starting my own jewelry making school here in Tacoma for the past three and a half years. When I saw the MetalUrge festival coming together this past summer it made me feel like the timing was right to give it a try.”

Reeves’ Tacoma Metal Arts Center had a soft opening last weekend with an open house and holiday sale. The sale continues through Wednesday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., selling mostly jewelry. Weekly jewelry and metalsmithing classes begin again on January 16.

Tacoma Metal Arts Center is located at 711 St. Helens Ave. #102, Tacoma. 253-227-1694, www.tacomametalarts.com
