I can’t believe Tacoma Art Place has been around for two years now. The community art center just off MLK Jr. Way on the Hilltop is celebrating its second birthday this Saturday with an open house full of – what else? – free art classes. TAP was set up by local art co-operative diva Linda Danforth along the model of one she visited in Africa. The theory was that for a small, affordable membership fee, artists and community members could get access to loaned equipment, donated supplies and work space that would otherwise be too expensive. Here’s the story I did back then.

Since then, TAP has organized fashion show fundraisers, held gallery shows, offered all sorts of classes and generally brought the community together.

Here’s what’s on offer at the birthday party on Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.:

Painted Shopping Bags with Teresa K Owens
10:00am to 2:00pm
Create art you can carry and have fun doing it. Bring your own cloth shopping bag (even a printed one) or purchase one. Supplies will be furnished, prepare to get messy Beginners very welcome.

Simple Beaded Earrings
Noon to 2:00pm
Learn to create earrings with local jewelry designer Michelle Merritt.   Supplies will be furnished and we’ll show you where the tools are stored at Tacoma Art Place so you can come back and use them.
Pencil & Ink Drawing
Noon to 2:00pm
Think you can’t draw?  Join in this introductory class led by Bond Williams and give it a try!  Supplies will be furnished.
Holiday Gift Making
1:00pm to 3:00pm
Want some ideas to make creative and affordable gifts for the holidays?  Michaela Eaves has plenty of ideas so join in the fun!  Supplies will be furnished.
Introduction to Painting with Acrylics
3:00pm to 5:00pm
Always wanted to try painting with acrylics?  They have their own advantages, characteristics, and unique possibilities. Lorraine Toler will show essential techniques.  Most supplies will be furnished but it would be helpful if you can bring a canvas.  We’ll supply as many as we can.
Wearable Art Designer Aprons with Bo Chambers
3:00pm to 5:00pm
Sew a unique designer apron with fiber artist Bo Chambers.  Supplies will be furnished.  Pick from the many donated materials, ribbons, beads and other items to embellish your apron.

There’ll also be refreshments including Mad Hat teas, raffles for free memberships and more. TAP is located at 1116 S. 11th St, Tacoma. Information:
