Hantavirus becomes issue at popular Yosemite area

The deaths of two visitors have led officials at Yosemite National Park to issue a warning to 1,700 people they might have been exposed to hantavirus while staying at Curry Village.

The first person died in June and the second person died earlier this month. Two other people have been infected but are expected to live.

All of them, as well as the people who were warned of the situation Tuesday, stayed in the park’s popular “Signature Tent Cabins” at Curry Village.

1 dead from rodent disease possibly linked to stay at Yosemite National Park

The Associated Press reports that a man died and a woman is seriously ill from a rodent-borne disease they may have contracted during a stay at Yosemite National Park:

FRESNO, Calif. — A man died and a woman became seriously ill after contracting a rare rodent-borne disease that might have been linked to their stay at a popular lodging area in Yosemite National Park, officials said Thursday.

The man was the first person to die from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome contracted in the park, though two others were stricken in a more remote area in 2000 and 2010, officials said.

Part-time ranger killed by falling tree at Yosemite

From the National Park Service:

Ryan Hiller, an employee of Delaware North Companies and a former seasonal protection ranger for the park, died last Saturday when a tree landed on his tent cabin in the stables housing area during a storm. The park has released the following statement: “With intense sadness, we share with our employees and partners the news regarding the death of Ryan Hiller during Saturday’s winter storm event.  Ryan was employed by DNC and worked this past summer for the Yosemite Protection Division at Little Yosemite Valley, where he was involved in many Half Dome emergency responses.  Although the

Third body found at Yosemite National Park, likely member of party swept over falls in July hiking accident.

From the National Park Service:

The body of Ninos Yacoub, 27, one of three hikers swept over Vernal Fall last July, was found in the Merced River approximately 100 yards below the Vernal Fall footbridge last Tuesday. Yacoub has been missing since July 19th, when he, Hormiz David, 22, and Ramina Badal, 21, were seen being swept over the 317-foot-high waterfall.  David’s body was found on August 5th approximately 240 feet below the waterfall. Mike Gauthier lands permanent position at Yosemite

Mike Gauthier, the former supervisory climbing ranger at Mount Rainier National Park, has been named chief of staff at Yosemite National Park.

Gauthier has spent the last 11 months in an acting assignment to the park from the Office of Legislative and Congressional Affairs in Washington, where he was a Bevinetto Fellow. As a Bevinetto Fellow, Gauthier worked for the assistant secretary for the fish, wildlife and Pparks and also for the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
