Trip to Capitol State Forest doesn’t end so well

I’m sure the idea of going for a ride through Capitol State Forest sounded like a good one. But for one couple, their ride on Tuesday didn’t end so well.

According to the state Department of Natural Resources, the single-vehicle rollover accident could have been a lot worse. The two occupants, a man and a woman, and their dog were able to escape the vehicle without injuries shortly before it burst into flames.

But department officials said this incident could be filed under “completely preventable.”

DNR will have burn ban in place this summer

The state Department of Natural Resources this morning announced there will be a statewide burn ban on all DNR-protected lands from July 1-Sept. 30. The ban does not apply to federal lands.

The threat of wildfires from escaped outdoor burning is high during the summer months due to dry forest vegetation. Each year, the department strives to keep all wildfires under 10 acres. Last year, DNR had 71 wildfire starts simply from escaped outdoor burn piles, which burned approximately 153 acres, said a department news release.
