U.S. Forest Service announces fee free days, including this weekend

The U.S. Forest Service today announced eight dates when it will waive fees that are usually collected to support forest maintenance and amenities.

Visitors to national forests will not pay fees on the following dates in 2012:

  • Saturday-Monday: Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend
  • June 9: Get Outdoors Day
  • Sept. 29: National Public Lands Day
  • Nov. 10-12: Veterans Day weekend

Despite the Forest Service’s fee waivers, the agency does not usually charge for visitors to national forests. In fact, the Forest Service does not charge for access on 98 percent of its land, said a news release. More

Forest Service opts to keep campground discounts for seniors, disabled

The U.S. Forest Service announced earlier today it would maintain discounts for passholders at Forest Service campgrounds operated by private businesses.

Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said his decision not to implement proposed changes means seniors and people with disabilities will continue to receive a discount at Forest Service campgrounds run by private concessions.

The service had proposed changes to discounts provided to holders of Golden Age and Golden Access Passports and Senior and Access Passes. Under the proposal, discounts at concession-operated campgrounds would have changed from the current 50 percent to 10 percent.
