Fishing report: Good prospects for the weekend


Cowlitz: The river has been slow to fair for summer-run steelhead in the Blue Creek area. Free drifting eggs from a boat has been most effective, but try back trolling baits or plugs when eggs are not working. The spring chinook action has been best at the barrier dam. Try using eggs and sand shrimp.

Green: People are catching a few steelhead and the water is in good shape. Floats and jigs or spinners are the most popular gear. Try No. 3 size spinners with a black blade and gold body or a gold blade and black body.

Fishing report: Reports are mixed, in part because of the weather

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will run in the Sports section in Wednesday’s newspaper.


Columbia: The state last week we sampled 2,348 anglers who had 82 adult and one jack spring chinook and five steelhead. Fishing success improved in the Cathlamet area as the week progressed. Remember, the the mainstem below Bonneville Dam will be closed to fishing for salmon, steelhead and shad Tuesday and April 2. Sturgeon fishing is slow, but some legal-size fish are being caught in the The Dalles and John Day pools. Just an FYI, there have been lots of smelt

Fishing report: Ocean salmon fishing begins shut down

Here are some reports that will be included in the full fishing report in Saturday’s paper:


Nisqually: The action has slowed down in recent days. Anglers are catching a few dark chinook, but not much else.

Puyallup: The fishing has been slow in the latter part of the week. Most folks are blaming the low water levels.

Skokomish: The river is producing a fair number of coho, and a chum salmon here and there. Eggs seem to be the best bait to use right now.


Black: The action remains on the slow side. Trout anglers should try slowly
