Sunrise opens Friday at Mount Rainier, other areas to follow

The highest point in Mount Rainier National Park that can be reached by vehicle will open ahead of schedule Friday.

Warm weather has helped melt snow, allowing staff to open Sunrise Road and Sunrise Lodge early. The visitor center is scheduled to open July 3.

The Paradise, Longmire, Ohanapecosh and Carbon River ares of the park are already open for the season. The Narada Falls trail is also open, but may close periodically due to construction.

The Cougar River Campground opens Thursday and the White River Campground follows Friday.

Road to Sunrise at Mount Rainier to remain closed today

The road to Sunrise will not open today in order to support the effort to recover the body of climbing ranger Nick Hall on Mount Rainier.

Hall fell to his death Thursday while rescuing four injured climbers high on the Emmons Glacier. Poor weather has kept the recovery team from reaching his body by helicopter.

Park officials originally hoped to open the road to Paradise for the summer on Friday morning and the said late Friday they hoped to open today. However, park spokesman Kevin Bacher has announced the road will remain closed today.

Sunrise opens Friday, pack your winter gear

I was up at Sunrise earlier today to get a preview of the new exhibits going in at the visitor center there.

I also talked with Chief Ranger Chuck Young about the opening of Sunrise scheduled for Friday.

Folks, there is a lot of snow at Sunrise.

Drivers, beware of animals along the roadway. Photographer Dean Koepfler and I saw three elk on the lower road, and Young said a black bear has been seen mulitple times along the road below Sunrise Point.
