Work is expected to begin Monday on a new Stehekin ferry dock. The new landing will provide universal access for all passengers traveling up Lake Chelan via commercial ferries.

This work is part of more than $2 million dollars in work that has been completed or is planned to improve the accessibility of facilities and services in Stehekin. It also is the most notable improvement to the Stehekin ferry landing in almost 40 years, said a news release from North Cascades National Park Complex.

North Cascades National Park has reopened the entire Rainbow Lake Trail and the Rainbow Creek Trail from McAlester Pass to Bench Creek Camp. Bench Creek, Bowan and Rainbow Meadows Camps also have reopened.

These areas were not directly affected by the Rainbow Bridge Fire and the threat of fire impacting these trails has significantly decreased, said a park new release.

Portions of the Rainbow Bridge Fire, located within the Stehekin Valley of Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, are approaching buildings on the valley floor.

The fire was frist reported Thursday just before 5 p.m. The fire is burning in extremely steep terrain in the Rainbow Creek and Boulder Creek drainages about three miles up-valley from Stehekin Landing.

Earlier this evening, the fire was estimated at 1,200 acres in size and is burning in a heavily forested area. The cause of the fire is unknown.

The National Park Service is seeking public input on the Environmental Assessment for the Stehekin winter ferry landing improvement project.
