Culvert project will shut state Route 123 at Mount Rainier early next week

State Route 123 through Mount Rainier National Park will be closed temporarily beginning Monday at 7 a.m.

The closure will extend from Cayuse Pass at the intersection with state Route 410, to just north of the Shriner Peak trailhead, approximately seven miles south of Cayuse Pass.

Depending on the weather, park superintendent Randy King said the closures is expected to last until 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Tacoma-based Tucci and Sons, Inc., will be working to replace a 36-inch culvert that runs under the road. In 2009, crews discovered that concrete culvert sections had separated well beneath the road. The Washington

Cayuse Pass opening delayed until Tuesday

Crews from Washington State Department of Transportation hope to open at noon on Tuesday Cayuse Pass, on state Route 123 on the eastside of Mount Rainier National Park. That is, if the weather allows.

They had hoped to open the pass today, but Thursday’s storm brought more than 6 inches of new snow to the area, forcing the delay.

Plow crews broke a path over the pass more than two weeks ago, but have been working to clear the remaining snow from the roadway. At the pass, snow was at least 12 feet deep, said Kris Olsen, department spokeswoman.
