Day-use area, portion of campground reopened at Penrose Point State Park

The day-use area and first campground loop at Penrose Point State Park have reopened. State Parks and Recreation made the announcement earlier this afternoon.

Work has been taking place since September as the park has gone through a sewer system upgrade.

State Parks officials noted that the trail dump station and boat pumpout are expected to be closed through Feb. 8.

The park is located on the east side of Key Peninsula, at the head of Mayo Cove.

State Parks honors volunteers, groups for their efforts

Individuals and groups were recently honored by the State Parks and Recreation Commission as recipients of the 2011 Volunteer Recognition Awards for outstanding volunteer service.

State Parks works with volunteers throughout Washington to enhance the agency’s efficiency and to stretch funding. Last year, volunteers performed 271,260 hours of work, equal to 130 full-time employees.

Among the winners were Bob and Linda Putts of Tacoma, who received a lifetime achievement award.
The couple has volunteered for State Parks for the past seven years, with most of their time spent at Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park. The Putts answered visitors questions,
