Injured climber rescued Sunday evening on Mount Rainier

UPDATED AT 1:18 P.M.

A Canadian man was rescued high on Mount Rainier on Sunday evening after falling and suffering “multiple traumatic injuries,” Mount Rainier National Park announced this morning. The man was taken by Chinook helicopter to Madigan Army Medical Center.

Park spokeswoman Patti Wold identified the victim as Peter Almerling of British Columbia, reported The Associated Press. No additional details on Almerling were available.

According to the park statement, the man fell while descending at 13,500 feet above sea level on the Emmons Glacier. The incident was reported to Camp Schurman, where climbing rangers are stationed,

Team organizing search for four missing on Rainier departs park

The National Park Service Incident Response Team organizing the search for four missing people on Mount Rainier has left the park, spokesman Kevin Bacher said this morning.

The incident command role has been turned over to Steve Winslow, a district ranger from Black Canyon National Park.

The search for two climbers and two campers more than 10 days overdue has been greatly scaled back. The park visitors were trapped in severe storm conditions on the mountain. It is so far unclear if searchers are taking advantage of good weather today to search.

Weather turns back search helicopter at Mount Rainier

UPDATE, Sunday 2:50 p.m. - Improved visibility on Mount Rainier today is allowing searchers to look for four overdue campers and climbers in areas they’ve previously been unable to search, park spokeswoman Patti Wold said.

A Chinook helicopter attempted to help with the search but was turned back by unfavorable conditions, Wold said. The helicopter remains on standby at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Hiker from Auburn missing in Gifford Pinchot National Forest near Ashford and Mount Rainier National Park

Search and rescue teams are scouring the Gifford Pinchot National Forest near the southwest corner of Mount Rainier National Park for a 45-year-old Auburn man who has been missing since Saturday, according to KIROtv.com.

The website is reporting that the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department reports that the man is an equipped and experienced hiker. His truck was found on Forest Service Road 85.

Rescuers from Lewis and Pierce counties are involved in the search.
