Salmon fishing seasons established

Here is the news release sent out this morning by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife about the setting of salmon fishing seasons:

State and tribal co-managers yesterday agreed on a package of salmon fisheries that meets conservation goals for wild salmon populations and provides fishing opportunities on healthy stocks.

Washington’s 2013 salmon fishing seasons, developed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and treaty tribal co-managers, were finalized yesterday during the Pacific Fishery Management Council’s (PFMC) meeting in Portland. The regulations cover salmon fisheries in Puget Sound, Washington’s ocean and coastal areas and the Columbia River.

First North of Falcon meeting set for March 1

Washington fishermen will get the first forecast for salmon runs in 2013 during a public meeting in Olympia March 1. The meeting is the annual kickoff of the salmon fishing season-setting process, also known as the North of Falcon process.

Staffers from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife will present initial forecasts that have been compiled by state and tribal biologists.

The meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m-3 p.m. in Room 172 of the Natural Resources Building, 1111 Washington St. SE, Olympia.

People attending the meeting will have an chance to talk to fishery managers about the pre-season forecasts

North of Falcon process begins with salmon forecast meeting Feb. 28

A series of meetings to discuss salmon runs and fishing seasons will begin Feb. 28 with the release of salmon forecasts for the state.

The meetings, part of the North of Falcon process, will conclude April 1-6 when the Pacific Fishery Management Council meets in Seattle to adopts ocean fisheries regulations and state-tribal fishing plans.

At the Feb. 28 meeting, staffers from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife will release Puget Sound, coastal Washington and Columbia River salmon forecasts. They also will discuss fishery management objectives and 2012 recreational fishing opportunities.

Recreational salmon fishing seasons set

I was on the road this week, turkey hunting in Colville, when the recreational salmon fishing seasons were approved on Thursday.

Among the changes impacting local anglers is an increase in the number of days recreational fishing will be closed on the Puyallup River to avoid gear conflicts.
