Sally Jewell reaction: Personality, drive, passion draw praise

Here are some excerpts from a story I wrote for Thursday’s paper as people react to the news that Sally Jewell, head of REI, has been nominated to be the next Secretary of the Interior.

Obama to nominate REI’s Sally Jewell for department of Interior secretary

From the Associated Press:

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Wednesday will nominate business executive and former engineer Sally Jewell to lead the Interior Department, an administration official said.

Jewell is the president and chief executive officer at the outdoors company Recreational Equipment, Inc., known as REI, which sells clothing and gear for outdoor adventures with more than 100 stores across the country. Prior to joining REI in 2000, Jewell worked in commercial banking and as an engineer for Mobil Oil Corporation.

If confirmed, Jewell would replace current Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who held the post throughout Obama’s first term.

REI to open new store in Silverdale

REI plans to open a store in Silverdale, the Kent-based company announced this morning.

In a statement released today by the 74-year-old company, it announced the 24,500-square-foot store will be located at the intersection of Randall Way and Myhre Place. The store will include a bike shop, rental department and space for community meetings and classes.

“Our new Silverdale store will be much more convenient for more than 15,000 active REI members who reside along the Kitsap Peninsula,” Kevin Golic, an REI retail director, said in the prepared statement. “We look forward to providing REI’s quality products, advice and service

Get ready for bike month Saturday at the Tacoma Bike Swap

Need a bike so you can get the most out of Bike Month? The Tacoma Bike Swap is scheduled for April 28, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the University of Puget Sound. Vendors and individuals plan to sell new and used bikes. The event includes beginner bike maintenance clinics. REI announces plans to open Olympia store

REI  announced this morning its plans to open a new store in Olympia next spring. The two-story, 25,000 square-foot store will be located off Cooper Point Road at Westfield Capital Shopping Mall. Company officials say they expect to hire about 50 people to work at the store.

The Olympia store will be the eighth western Washington REI location, serving more than 384,000 active members in the Puget Sound area. The other stores are located in Tacoma, Alderwood, Bellingham, Issaquah, Redmond, Seattle and Tukwila. The Tacoma store is about 23,000 square feet.

According to the company, more than 9,000 REI members
