Anglers caught and kept a record number of Columbia River chinook salmon in August.
The total kept catch for adult chinook last month on the lower river was 7,584 fish, said Joe Hymer, state fish biologist.
During Aug. 27-Friday, anglers on the lower river made 17,109 trips and caught 4,079 adult fall chinook (3,984 kept and 95 released), 617 summer steelhead (374 kept and 243 released) and 67 adult coho (25 kept and 42 released).
The catch rate has slowed in the first few days of September, as the water level has dropped, Hymer said.
