It should be a good weekend. Anglers are hoping the rain will bring salmon into local rivers, the first razor clam dig opens today and crabbing opens in many areas of Puget Sound, just not in Marine Area 11 (Tacoma).

Chehalis: The salmon fishing has been decent at the Montesano bridge and upstream from there. People are catching a mix of chinook and coho. Anglers are reportedly using spinners.

Cowlitz: The salmon fishing has been slow in the last week, while some steelhead are being caught at Blue Creek.

Recreational crab fishing will reopen Saturday in most areas of Puget Sound. While that includes the Olympia area, the waters off Tacoma will not reopen.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Tuesday that waters reopening at 8 a.m. are marine areas 4 (Neah Bay), 5 (Sekiu), 6 (eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca), 7 (San Juan Islands), 8-1 (Deception Pass, Hope Island, and Skagit Bay), 8-2 (Port Susan and Port Gardner), 9 (Admiralty Inlet), 12 (Hood Canal) and 13 (South Puget Sound).

Recreational crabbing in the waters of Tacoma and Olympia will reopen Nov. 21. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife announced this afternoon marine areas 11 (Tacoma) and 13 (South Puget Sound) would reopen at 8 a.m. that day.

Crabbing in Hood Canal (Marine Area 12) will not reopen this fall.

All but one area of Puget Sound will open to sport crab fishing Friday. We had the incorrect date in today’s fishing report.

The exception to Friday’s opener is Marine Area 7, where fishing opens July 15 in the area’s southern portion (San Juan Islands/Bellingham) and Aug. 15 in the northern portion (Gulf of Georgia).

Under new rules adopted earlier this year by the state Fish and Wildlife Commission, all Puget Sound areas will be open for crabbing Thursdays through Mondays.
