Law enforcement patrols will emphasize boating under the influence laws June 22-24

Officers from 50 marine law enforcement agencies will be out Friday-Sunday for Operation Dry Water, the annual campaign to enforce boating under the influence laws on Washington’s waterways.

The campaign focuses on preventing accidents, injuries and deaths resulting from people abusing alcohol or drugs while operating boats. According to Washington State Parks Boating Programs, at least 30 people died between 2007-2011 in reportable boating accidents where alcohol use was a contributing factor.

Agencies on look out for people boating under the influence

Boaters should be aware that federal, state, county and local law enforcement agencies will be cracking down this weekend on people boating under the influence
Taking place Friday-Sunday, Operation Dry Water is an annual education and enforcement effort aimed at reducing alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities.

According to U.S. Coast Guard data from 2009, alcohol was a primary factor in 16 percent of fatalities from recreational boating accidents.
