Plenty of camping options for Memorial Day weekend

Campers will have plenty of options this holiday weekend, thanks in part to early snowmelt.

In the southeast corner of Mount Rainier National Park, the 188 campsites at Ohanapecosh Campground opens Friday. Cougar Rock Campground, between Longmire and Paradise, will not open until June 27 instead of Friday. The 173-site campground will be open six fewer weeks because of sequestration.

Park officials also said Stevens Canyon Road will open at noon Friday, not 8 a.m. as previously announced, as long as the weather.

Mount Rainier desperately seeking campground hosts

The staff at Mount Rainier National Park is scrambling to find campground hosts for Cougar Rock and Ohanapecosh.

If you feel you could fill either of these positions, contact Kevin Bacher at 360-569-6567 or fill out an application at this website.

Here is the rest of the news release Bacher sent out:

1) Answer visitor questions about the campground, the park, and the area.
2) Assist with registration and orientation of visitors.
3) Perform campground patrols when necessary.
4) Perform light maintenance duties in the campground such as picking up trash.
