Salmon fishing seasons established

Here is the news release sent out this morning by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife about the setting of salmon fishing seasons:

State and tribal co-managers yesterday agreed on a package of salmon fisheries that meets conservation goals for wild salmon populations and provides fishing opportunities on healthy stocks.

Washington’s 2013 salmon fishing seasons, developed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and treaty tribal co-managers, were finalized yesterday during the Pacific Fishery Management Council’s (PFMC) meeting in Portland. The regulations cover salmon fisheries in Puget Sound, Washington’s ocean and coastal areas and the Columbia River.

North of Falcon: Pink salmon forecast up overall

Getting our first look at salmon forecasts for 2013 at the North of Falcon meeting Olympia. I’ll try to post more as the meeting goes along and there are breaks.

Here is the outlook for pink salmon:

The Puyallup River should see a significant increase in the number of pink salmon returning, with a forecast of 1.24 million, up from about 900,000 forecast to return in 2011.

The Green River run was forecast at more than 2.1 million pink salmon in 2011, but is expected to be about 1.35 million this year.

Overall, the pink forecast is almost 6.23 million

Salmon forecast meeting Friday in Olympia

Just a reminder that the state Department of Fish and Wildlife will announce its preseason forecast for salmon runs at a public meeting Friday.

People attending the North of Falcon session also will have the chance to comment on the structure of upcoming fishing seasons in Puget Sound, the Pacific Ocean and Columbia River.

The meeting will be from 9 a.m-3 p.m. in Room 172 of the Natural Resources Building, 1111 Washington St. SE, Olympia.

First North of Falcon meeting set for March 1

Washington fishermen will get the first forecast for salmon runs in 2013 during a public meeting in Olympia March 1. The meeting is the annual kickoff of the salmon fishing season-setting process, also known as the North of Falcon process.

Staffers from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife will present initial forecasts that have been compiled by state and tribal biologists.

The meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m-3 p.m. in Room 172 of the Natural Resources Building, 1111 Washington St. SE, Olympia.

People attending the meeting will have an chance to talk to fishery managers about the pre-season forecasts
