Munn: The trout fishing has picked up. People still doing well with chironomids. Most people are fishing chironomid patterns under an indicator. Or try leeaches and woolly buggers in dark colors.

Rattlesnake: The trout fishing has been good to very good. Try leeches fished on an intermediate sinking line. Be willing to change the color of your fly, from olive to black to brown, until you find a color that is productive.

Tapps: The lake is producing a few smallmouth bass, but not in great numbers or size. The water temperatures have dropped, likely slowing the action. The fish seem to be holding fairly deep, in water 20-25 feet deep.

Rivers

Cowlitz: The fishing remains fair at best for steelhead and a few more spring chinook. The action has been hit and miss. For springers, back trolling with eggs, sand shrimp or herring. Off the bank, use eggs or sand shrimp under a bobber.

Olympic Coast: The rivers are on the rise again, so this might not be the weekend to make the trip to the coast. The Sol Duc has been producing some steelhead and a few spring chinook. The Bogachiel and Calawah have been slow. The Hoh closed Tuesday.

Yakima: The trout fishing has been fair to good. There has been a March brown hatch most afternoons and there are still some skwalas coming off as well. The fish seem to be congregated in specific pools, rather than spread throughout the river.

Salt water

Beaches: The state has approved a morning razor clam dig that will run from Wednesday-April 30 at Twin Harbors beach and some of those days at three other ocean beaches. No digging will be allowed at any beach after noon. Here are the beaches that are open, along with the low tide times: Wednesday, 6:10 a.m., -0.3 feet, Twin Harbors; Thursday, 6:54 a.m., -1.0 feet, Twin Harbors; Friday, 7:38 a.m., -1.5 feet, Twin Harbors, Long Beach, Mocrocks, Copalis; April 27, 8:24 a.m., -1.7 feet, Twin Harbors, Long Beach, Mocrocks, Copalis; April 28, 9:11 a.m., -1.7 feet, Twin Harbors, Long Beach, Mocrocks, Copalis; April 29, 10:01 a.m., -1.5 feet, Twin Harbors, Long Beach, Mocrocks; and April 30, 10:55 a.m., -1.0 feet, Twin Harbors.

South Sound: The reports are more positive this week. The state checkers reported nine chinook were brought in by 29 boats. People are reportedly catching fish along the shoreline north of Gig Harbor and off the slag pile. Fishing spoons, such as a green splatterback Tail Wagger, off the bottom has been working best.

Westport: Rough water conditions have limited ocean fishing. When the boats have been able to get out, people are catching some nice lingcod, as well as limits of rockfish.

(Anacortes Salmon Derby)

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will appear in Saturday’s Sports section.

Lakes

Black: The trout fishing is slowly picking up. According to reports, the best action has been a result of trolling with bait or spoons.

Munn: The rainbow trout action has been good. Fly anglers are having success using a green woolly bugger fished on a sinking line, or fishing chironomids under a strike indicator. Remember this is a catch-and-release lake.

Nahwatzel: Fishing with orange Power Bait has been the most effective method for catching limits.

Potholes: Water temperatures in the sand dunes area has reached a reported 60
degrees. Bass anglers are catching largemouth in the dunes, including one that weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces. Smallmouth bass, including some topping 5 pounds, are being caught from the rocks by Goose Island. Lind Coulee is starting to produce some walleye, as is Crab Creek.

Rivers

Cowlitz: The fishing is still on the slow side, but people putting in the time to cover lots of water are bring home some steelhead and a few spring chinook. Side drifting eggs or corkies, as well as back trolling bait have been effective methods.

Olympic Coast: Rain earlier this week has shot water levels up rapidly. The Hoh went from about 2,000 cfs mid-day Thursday to 5,540 cfs Friday morning. This might not be the weekend to make the trip.

Yakima: Flows on the river have doubled since early this week, and water conditions below the Teanaway River confluence are poor. If you have to try, hit the upper river.

Saltwater

Hood Canal: The action has been on the slow side, but indications are the best action is at the south end of the canal. Try spots like Triton Cove, Hole in the Wall or between Ayock Point, Lilliwaup and down to Hoodsport.

North Sound: The fishing has been good, at least for Scott Fowler of Burlington. His 21.52-pound fish was big enough to win the Anacortes Salmon Derby, and the $15,000 first-place prize. In second was Rich Olson of Everett with a 19.42-pound salmon, to earn $5,000. In third place was Jay Murphy of Puyallup, whose 19.10-pounder earned him $2,500. Jerry Schmidt of Olympia won $2,500 for catching the secret weight fish, a 7.20-pound salmon. Overall, there were 256 fish weighed, at an average of 8.3 pounds.

South Sound: The salmon fishing remains slow overall. Some local fishermen are reporting there seems to be an uptick in the action, with some chinook being caught at Quartermaster Harbor by fishing spoons on the bottom.

Rivers

Cowlitz: Anglers are catching mostly steelhead these. The best action has been around the trout hatchery. Fish close to the brush with small gear with current river conditions.

Lewis: Anglers are catching steelhead and some fall chinook, primarily from the North Fork around the salmon hatchery. Most of the chinook were released.

Olympic Coast: The steelhead action has been pretty good with the rivers in really good shape. The Hoh has been fishing as well as any other river in the area. There is a bit of rain in the forecast, but not enough to hurt the fishing.

Yakima: The trout fishing has been fair, but the fish being caught are the larger rainbows. Look to run streamers through the slower water. Try using a Dali Lama or sculpin pattern in sizes 4-6, or a Pat’s stonefly nymph with a zebra midge as a dropper.

Lakes

American: Anglers are reporting they’re catching some rainbow trout. Most people are fishing off the bottom with a dough bait or Power Eggs. Yellow seems to be the best color.

Munn: The action has really slowed down in the last few weeks. The action should pick back up as temperatures warm.

Saltwater

Fly fishing: The beach action for resident coho has been good on both sides of the Tacoma Narrows. Boat anglers and kayakers are doing better, because the fish seem to be holding out a little father from shore. People are doing well with baitfish patterns, with all color variations working well.

South Sound: Salmon fishing in Marine Area 11 is closed and the action in Marine Area 13 has been slow. The squid fishing remains very good. There were reports of good action in Steilacoom and from Tacoma docks.

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will appear in Saturday’s Sports section.

As long as we don’t get a lot of rain, river conditions should be good this weekend, although they might be a bit high.

Rivers

Green: People are catching a mix of steelhead and cutthroat trout near Flaming Geyser State Park. People are reporting have success fishing with pink worms or eggs.

Humptulips: People are catching a mix of coho and steelhead, and an occasional late but still bright chinook.

Olympic Coast: The steelhead action has been improving. The Bogachiel has been a good spot to try. Jigs under a float have been working well.

Satsop: Although rivers are a bit high, anglers are catching some coho here and on the Wynoochee and Humptulips. People also are catching some wild and hatchery steelhead. Jigs under a bobber, as well as sand shrimp and eggs all are working well.

Yakima: The mild weather has made for some good fishing. Streamers on sink-tip lines, midge pupa or stonefly nymphs on floating lines with indicators are working well. Look for the trout holding in slow water, moving about walking pace.

Lakes

Munn: The lake is fishing very well these days. But the action has been mostly with chironomids fished under an indicator on a floating line. The best method is getting your fly 1-2 feet above the weeds, so try using a 12- to 15-foot leader.

Offut: Some limits of rainbow trout are still being caught. Pink and yellow Power Eggs fished on a 1- to 2-foot leader off the bottom has been the best set up. Most of the fish are measuring 14-18 inches.

Saltwater

Beaches: The current razor clam dig continues through Sunday. The low tide times and beaches open are Saturday at 8:01 p.m., -1.6 feet, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks, Long Beach and Copalis; and Sunday, 8:47 p.m., -1.0 feet, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks and Long Beach. No digging is allowed before noon.

Fly fishing: The Tacoma Narrows has been the hot spot for resident coho salmon. Some of the fish are measuring 17 inches long. The fishing has been very good at Titlow Park. Euphasid and baitfish patterns are working well.

South Sound: The fishing for blackmouth remains very slow. Fishing in Marine Area 11 (Tacoma) closes the end of the month. The squid action remains very good. People have been catching them off docks in Tacoma and Steilacoom, including some being caught during the day.

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will appear in Saturday’s paper.

Lakes
American: Look for the rainbow trout holding among the weeds in shallow water. Try using yellow Power Bait on a 4-foot leader. Some of the fish are topping 20 inches long.

Munn: The lake is still fishing well for trout. Go with white leeches fished on an intermediate- or fast-sink line.

Offut: The fishing for trout has improved, with most people catching their limits of rainbow trout. Some people are catching their limits in close to an hour. Dock anglers are using worms and Power Bait fished off the bottom on a 1- or 2-foot leader.

Pass: Try fishing a leech pattern on a sinking line and keep your fly close to the bottom. As long as the mild weather holds, the fishing for rainbow trout should remain good to very good. Try using smaller wooley buggers, beadhead mohair leeches and micro leeches in normal blacks, olive, brown or maroon.

Spencer: The fishing has been fishing very well for trout. People are using worms and Power Bait fished off the bottom, casting and trolling Mepps or Roostertail spinners. Island Lake also has been fishing well.

Rivers

Minter: The chum action has been very good, but there are less and less bright fish being caught. There also are plenty of fellow anglers trying their luck as well.

Nisqually: The fishing has been slowed by high, dirty water. A few people are catching some chum salmon, but the action is far from good.

Olympic Coast: The fishing has been fair for winter-run steelhead. Anglers are catching some hatchery fish, but the runs are just getting started. The rivers are flowing a bit high, but could be unfishable if the rain in the forecast does come in.

Saltwater

Fly fishing: The searun cutthroat trout action remains good to very good. The Purdy Spit has been a good option, especially on an outgoing tide. Baitfish patterns and woolly buggers all in olive, have been working best. Remember, searuns must be released.

South Sound: The wind this week has kept many people off the water, but a few blackmouth are being caught. People fishing along the slag pile and down to Point Defiance had some shelter from the wind and found some fish. The squid fishing has been very good from local docks.
