Road to Windy Ridge is open

Forest Road 99 in Gifford Pinchot National Forest opened Thursday, giving visitors access to Mount St. Helens eastside attractions such as Windy Ridge, Meta Lake and the Miner’s Car as well as the Mount Margaret Backcountry.

Visitors to this remote and unique location deep within the blast-zone can see the amazing impact and recovery from the 1980 eruption. It is an experience to be had nowhere else in the world and only for a short time each year due to snow.

Former Mount St. Helens ranger Jim Gale retires after 32 years

From the National Park Service:

One of Pacific West Region’s most respected and revered park rangers, Jim Gale, hung up his flat hat for the last time on October 5th.

Gale served the National Park Service for 32 years, starting at Yellowstone and reaching the pinnacle of his career at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park as chief of interpretation. His work took him to some of the nation’s most treasured public lands – Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska, Indiana Dunes National Seashore, Blue Ridge National Park in Virginia, and Grand Canyon National Park. Forest Service Road 99, leading to Windy Ridge at Mount St. Helens, opens Friday

Forest Service Road 99 on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest will open for the season Friday morning. The road provides access to popular east-side Mount St. Helens attractions such as Windy Ridge, Meta Lake and the Miner’s Car.

Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument offers daily ranger-led activities at sites along Road 99, including “Eruption Talks” at the Windy Ridge Viewpoint. The programs will start Friday.

Interpretive programs offered at Lahar Viewpoint on Road 83 while Road 99 remained closed will continue Fridays- Sundays.

Forest Road 25 opens Thursday at Mount St. Helens

Forest Service Road 25, on the east side of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, is expected to open Thursday.

That will allow Forest Service crews to turn their attention to Road 99 that provides access to east-side monument attractions such Windy
Ridge, Meta Lake and Norway Pass Trailhead.

“In my 21 years on this Forest, this is the latest opening we’ve ever had,” Public Services Manager Ron Freeman said in a news release. “We are excited to finally get people into the Forest and Monument. Now if summer would just show, we’d really be happy.”
