Mount Si and Little Si trails could remain closed all week after plane crash

Two of the state’s most popular hiking trails, Mount Si and Little Si near North Bend, remain closed nearly two weeks after a single-engine plane crashed in the area Feb. 15.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources and Mount Si Natural Resources Conservation Area hoped to have the trail open by today but snow and winter weather hindered their effort to remove the wreckage over the weekend. The plane is at 2,000 feet and the snow level has been as low as 1,000 feet.

Mount Si trailheads remain closed through at least Friday

The closure of Mount Si and Little Si trailheads and trails will continue through at least Friday, the state Department of Natural Resources just announced.

On February 15, a single-engine airplane crashed in the Mount Si Natural Resources Conservation Area, which is managed by DNR and is a popular recreation area in eastern King County.

Immediately after the crash, the department closed access to the area to better help teams from the National Transportation Safety Board and other agencies conduct their investigation.

Plans for removal of the wreckage are scheduled to be completed by Friday.
