The National Park Foundation has announced it has established a memorial fund in honor of Margaret Anderson, who was shot and killed in the line of duty at Mount Rainier National Park.
The fund is being established to benefit Anderson’s two daughters, ages 3 and 1. Her husband, Eric, also is a ranger at Mount Rainier.

Unfortunately, Pierce County residents have seen too many memorial services for law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty. Sunday’s death of Mount Rainier National Park ranger Margaret Anderson was the sixth Pierce County law enforcement officer killed in less than 26 months.
National Park Service or law enforcement officers have been with Anderson’s body since Sunday. They are also stationed at the home of Anderson’s family. She is survived by her husband, Eric, and her 3- and 1-year-old daughters.

Lisa Nevin of Puyallup headed to the mountain with four friends Sunday morning for her first snow shoe hike.
They decided to start on a short loop trail at Longmire.
As they stood waiting to cross the road, they noticed the line of cars stopped for the tire chain checkpoint.
“My friend said that a lot of people lie to the rangers about having chains,” Nevin said. The friend pointed to one car in line, and said that it would probably have a hard time making it up the mountain without chains.

A candlelight vigil for Margaret Anderson will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Eatonville Early Learning Center, 560 Center St. E., Eatonville.
Anderson lived in Eatonville with her husband, Eric, also a ranger at Mount Rainier. The couple’s two daughters, ages 3 and 1, attend the daycare center.
