International Mountain Guides’ DaRita Sherpa dies on Mount Everest

Eric Simonson of Ashford-based International Mountain Guides posted this message moments ago on the company’s Facebook page:

IMG has lost a member of our Sherpa family. DaRita Sherpa from Phortse reportedly spent the night at Camp 3 without any problems. In the morning he was up, had breakfast, was fully dressed, boots on, preparing to descend back down to Camp 2 when he suddenly felt dizzy. He laid down in the tent and stopped breathing, and despite CPR efforts by his teammates, died. The HRA doctors at Base Camp think that this was probably either a sudden cardiac or cerebral

Central Washington professor helps climbers during deadly weekend on Mount Everest

The Associated Press is reporting that at least three people died attempting to summit Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain, over the weekend. A Central Washington University professor was reportedly near the summit and supplied help to some climbers.

From the Associated Press:

Three climbers died and two others were missing while descending from the summit of Mount Everest – a toll that raised concerns about overcrowding in the “death zone” at the top of the world’s tallest peak.

The deadly weekend unfolded as an estimated 150 climbers tried to reach the top Friday and Saturday as they rushed to

Before him, the youngest climber to scale Everest had been Temba Tsheri of Nepal, who reached the peak at age 16, according to the Associated Press story.

But today we are getting the first photos of Romero on top of the world, at 29.035 feet above sea level.

Which leads me to these questions:

  • Is 13 years too young to be trying feats

Simonson, IMG star in “Everest: Beyond the Limit”

I caught a couple of the season opening episodes of “Everest: Beyond the Limit” on the Discovery Channel.

This season the show focuses on the summit attempts led by International Mountain Guides and IMG’s Eric Simonson.

I thought Simonson came off pretty well on the two episodes I watched, especially when he had to tell an injured climber he could not make another summit attempt. With a dozen Everest expeditions under his belt, Simonson understands the mountain and the effort needed to reach the top of the world.

At times it might have seemed as if the Ashford resident might
