Effort to find missing climber becomes ‘continuing limited search’

Mount Rainier National Park officials this afternoon said the search for a missing climber – believed to be 50-year-old Rob Plankers of Olympia – has been scaled down to a “continuing limited search.”

Climbing rangers believe Plankers slid to his death on Liberty Ridge last week.

Earlier search efforts provided distinctive clues that indicate the climber fell from his exposed bivy at 13,600 feet, said a park news release.

Search efforts focused heavily in areas where the fallen climber would have likely come to rest. Much of the search area is composed of icefall debris, several heavily crevassed areas

Conditions slow search for missing climber

Searchers have so far failed to find an Olympia man believed to have died in an avalanche early Saturday morning on Mount Rainier.

Avalanche conditions improved enough this morning to allow two rescue rangers to look for 27-year-old Mark Wedeven, said park spokesman Kevin Bacher.

Rangers Glenn Kessler and Tom Payne are on the scene on the Ingraham Direct route.

“They have been searching slowly and methodically because of the avalanche conditions, but so dar they have not found anything,” Bacher said.

Park official are now looking at this as a recovery mission and not a rescue, as Wedeven is
