Westport salmon fishing opens seven days a week starting Friday

Salmon fishing in the waters off of Westport will be open seven days a week beginning Friday. That will bring Marine Area 2 in line with three other ocean areas already open on a daily basis.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife announced the change Thursday.
Pat Pattillo, salmon policy coordinator for the department, said the department at first limited fishing at Westport to five days a week to make sure the catch did not reach the quota too quickly and require an early closure.

Anglers can keep two chinook off Westport, Neah Bay starting Friday

As of Friday, anglers fishing off Westport and Neah Bay can keep up to two chinook salmon as part of their two-salmon daily limit, the state announced earlier today.

With that change, anglers will be allowed to keep two chinook per day in ocean waters off Westport (Marine Area 2), LaPush (Marine Area 3) and Neah Bay (Marine Area 4). Those fishing Marine Area 1 (Ilwaco) will continue to be limited to one chinook as part of their two-salmon daily limit.

State delays closure of bottomfishing in marine areas 3 and 4

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has altered course, announcing earlier today the recreational bottomfish fishery off the north coast of Washington will remain open through Labor Day, postponing a closure previously set for Friday.

A new regulation approved today will allow sport fishing for rockfish, lingcod, Pacific cod and other bottomfish to remain open through midnight Sept. 3 in Marine Area 3 and the western portion of Marine Area 4 off La Push and Neah Bay.

Bottomfishing to close Thursday in Marine Area 3 and portion of Area 4

The waters off the northern coast will close to recreational bottomfishing after midnight Thursday to protect yelloweye rockfish, a species federally recognized as overfished.

The closure by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife affects sport fishing for rockfish, lingcod, Pacific cod,and all other bottomfish in Marine Area 3 off La Push and the portion of Marine Area 4 west of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line off Neah Bay.

Westport halibut fishing to close Friday, marine areas 3 and 4 reopen for one day June 14

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife earlier today said the recreational halibut fishery will close in the northern nearshore area of Marine Area 2 at the end of the day Friday. The agency also said marine areas 3 and 4 will reopen for one more day of fishing June 14.

Heather Reed, a fish biologist, said anglers are expected to reach the halibut quota for the northern nearshore area of the Westport area by the end of Friday.

The rest of Marine Area 2 is already closed to halibut fishing.
