Fishing report: Best salmon fishing in the Strait

Lakes

Offut: The trout fishing has been best in the cool of the morning. Try Power Bait and nightcrawlers. The bass and perch fishing is picking up. Crappie jigs and nightcrawlers are effective for the perch.

Silver: The largemouth bass action has been good to very good. Some of the fish are weighing 3-6 pounds. The crappie action also has been very good, especially at sunset. Trolling Wedding Rings with a worm right above the grass line has been producing catfish. The action is best early or late in the day.

Fishing report: Plenty of salmon action in the Strait of Juan de Fuca

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will appear in Saturday’s Sports section.

Rivers

Columbia: Starting Saturday, anglers fishing on the lower river may keep up to two sockeye salmon as part of their daily catch limit. The new rule will be in effect through July 31 from the Astoria-Megler Bridge upriver to Bonneville Dam.

Cowlitz: The fishing has been fair, at best, based on state creel sampling.

Fishing report: Better action off Westport for salmon

RIVERS
Cedar: The trout fishing has been fair to good, especially early or late in the day. Dry flies will produce smaller rainbows. For bigger fish, use double nymph rigs with a large stonefly and a smaller nymph like a flashback pheasant tail.

Wynoochee: A few steelhead are being, with the action slowed a bit by low water levels. Try using a nightmare-pattern jig under a bobber, or small clusters of eggs or corkies.

Rivers

Cowlitz: The summer-run steelhead fishing has been slow, but it is expected to pick up in the next couple of weeks as more fish move into the system.

Sol Duc: The river wiil close to all fishing in the vicinity of Sol Duc Hatchery Saturday. The closure, in place until further notice, extends from the Sol Duc Hatchery outfall creek upstream to the concrete pump station. Fishing report: Good trout action in area lakes

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will appear in Wednesday’s Sports section.

Rivers

Green: The steelhead action is slowly improving. The Flaming Geyser State Park and state Route 18 bridge area have been the best spots. Bank anglers should try sand shrimp on a jig or under a bobber, or spinners and spoons. Boat anglers are having the best success, pulling plugs.

Naches: The fishing has been good for cutthroat trout. Use any terrestial pattern in size 10. The river level is still high enough to float with a raft.

Fishing reports: Lots of good action these days

Here are some of the reports that will be included in the fishing report that runs in Wednesday’s Sports section:

Rivers

Columbia: The spring Chinook action was fairly slow last week, based on state creel samples. There were 1,031 bank anglers checked, and they kept 59 adult Chinook and eight jacks, plus 16 steelhead. They released 42 adults and 18 jacks. There also were 605 boaters checked and they kept 39 adults, seven jacks and 22 steelhead. They also released 42 adults and eight jacks. Fishing reports: Plenty of good fishing news

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will run in Saturday’s Sports section.

Lakes

Black: The afternoon fishing has been pretty good for all species but trout. The crappie and yellow perch action has really improved.

Harts: The crappie fishing has picked up in recent days, while the trout action has been in ther slow side. Mini-jigs in green-white or yellow-white fished under a bobber have been effective for crappie.

Spot shrimp fishing in Tacoma waters reopens Wednesday

Recreational spot shrimp fishing will reopen for one day Wednesday in Marine Area 8-1 and Marine Area 11.

Area 11, the waters from the northern tip of Vashon Island to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, will be open from 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

Marine Area 8-1, mainly the waters on the east side of Whidbey Island, will open from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

The state is reopening the Tacoma waters because sufficient recreational spot shrimp quota remains for one more day of fishing.
