Check road conditions before heading to Mount Rainier this weekend

While the lure of playing in fresh snow might be hard to avoid, people planning to head to Mount Rainier National Park should check on road conditions before they leave home.

More than seven inches of new snow has accumulated at Paradise in the last 24 hours. There are now 155 inches of snow on the ground at the park’s most popular winter play area.

But with a winter storm warning in effect through Saturday morning, the road from Longmire to Paradise never opened.

Mount Rainier crews assessing safety along road to Paradise


Park officials have decided the danger is too great and will keep the road from Longmire to Paradise closed today.

About an hour ago, officials at Mount Rainier National Park said crews were out assessng the road from Longmire to Paradise. Afterwards they will decide if it will be open to the public today due to heavy rain and snow from the past 24 hours.

The road was closed Tuesday because of heavy snowfall and the danger of avalanches.

Storm keeps road above Longmire closed today, park aims to open snowplay area for weekend

UPDATED 10:29 A.M.

Mount Rainier National Park officials just announced the road to Paradise will remain closed at Longmire today.

The latest winter storm has brought 7-9 inches of new snow to Paradise, and more is expected today. The current National Weather Service forecast is calling for another 12-20 inches of snow today and tonight at Paradise.

Despite today’s closure, the park is planning for Paradise and the snowplay area to be open for the entire weekend, said Chief Ranger Chuck Young.
