Fishing report: Coho fishing best salmon action right now

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will appear in Wednesday’s newspaper:


North Sound: The coho salmon action is red hot, with most people bringing home their limits. Creel samples last week showed people averaged more than a salmon per person. The fishing has been good from Mukilteo down to the Shilshole area.

South Sound: The coho action in the waters off Tacoma are as good as they have been in quite a while. Some of the best action has been in the Redondo area, the slag pile, Quartermaster Harbor and the Gig Harbor shoreline. People have

Bassmaster magazine ranks 2 Washington locations among nation’s top bass fishing lakes

Bassmaster magazine announced this morning its list of the top 100 bass fishing lakes in the United States. Two popular Washington locations made the list.

The Columbia River was No. 20 and Lake Sammamish was 91st.

Texas’s Falcon Lake, famous also for deadly attacks by Mexican pirates, topped the list.

The list was determined by a panel of professional anglers and fishing writers. According to a statement released today by the magazine, “The 100 Best Bass Lakes list was ranked using a variety of qualifiers. Department of Natural Resource representatives provided the five most productive lakes in each state

Lake Sammamish kokanee do not qualify for Endangered Species Act protection

After evaluating current available scientific information, the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service a short time ago announced that Lake Sammamish kokanee
salmon do not meet the criteria of a distinct population segment and
therefore, are not a listable entity under the Endangered Species Act.

The determination comes in response to a 2007 petition from a group of
conservation organizations and local and tribal governments concerned about
the decline of the kokanee population. In 2008, the Service published a
