State reviews plans to deal with trees at Kopachuck State Park at Thursday meeting

State Parks will hold an informational meeting Thursday to discuss the plan to remove diseased trees at Kopachuck State Park. The plan includes the removal of trees diseased with laminated root rot and the sale of timber not usable by the park.

Tree root rot force closure of Kopachuck State Park campground

Concerns over the health of trees have forced the State Parks and Recreation Commission to close the campground at Kopachuck State Park.

With the forest health issues and threat to park visitor safety, the campground at the Gig Harbor park will not be open for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Park staff has noticed a gradual, but growing, pattern of dying trees in the campground, said a State Parks news release. Assistance was requested from Department of Natural Resources pathologists to help determine the extent of the problem and treatment options.
