No room at the inn, or anywhere in park, for Interior Secretary

The decision apparently was made Friday that Interior Secretary Ken Salazar would arrive at Mount Rainier National Park Monday night and visit with park staff and community partners on Tuesday.

Salazar was returning from Alaska and was next scheduled to be in Milwaukee today. So the decision was made to make a visit to Mount Rainier.

That left his advance planner scrambling to find a place for the secretary to spend the night. She found out, like so many other tourists, that find rooms at the last minute can be difficult at best.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar will visit Mount Rainier Tuesday

Ken Salazar on Tuesday will make his first visit to Mount Rainier National Park as secretary of the Interior.

Salazar was in the area in January for the funeral of park ranger Margaret Anderson, but he did not visit the park itself then.

After meeting with park employees earlier in the morning, Salazar will meet with representatives of the park’s tourism partners and gateway communities. He will talk about the benefit the park provides the region’s economy.

A National Park Service report released this spring showed that 1.19 million visitors in 2010 spent more than $35.3 million in the park
