Plenty of camping options for Memorial Day weekend

Campers will have plenty of options this holiday weekend, thanks in part to early snowmelt.

In the southeast corner of Mount Rainier National Park, the 188 campsites at Ohanapecosh Campground opens Friday. Cougar Rock Campground, between Longmire and Paradise, will not open until June 27 instead of Friday. The 173-site campground will be open six fewer weeks because of sequestration.

Park officials also said Stevens Canyon Road will open at noon Friday, not 8 a.m. as previously announced, as long as the weather.

Razor clam dig opens Wednesday at Twin Harbors; Copalis and Mocrocks closed for season

Another way to take advantage of the warm weather this week is to take part in the razor clam dig that will open Wednesday.

The dig will run through May 14 at Twin Harbors and Friday and Saturday at Long Beach. No digging will be allowed at either beach after noon.

Here are the low tide times for this dig:

  • Wednesday: 6:22 a.m., -0.5 feet, Twin Harbors

Next razor clam gets OK to open Tuesday

State shellfish managers have approved a morning razor clam dig that will run Tuesday-April 14 at Twin Harbors beach and April 12-14 at Long Beach, Copalis, and Mocrocks beaches.

No digging will be allowed at any beach after noon.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) approved the dig after marine toxin test showed the clams are safe to eat on those beaches.

The dates, along with morning low tides, are:

  • Tuesday: 6:39 a.m., 0.0 feet, Twin Harbors
  • Wednesday: 7:19 a.m., -0.3 feet, Twin Harbors
  • April 11: 7:57 a.m., -0.4 feet, Twin Harbors

State sets razor clam dig dates through the end of the year

Clam diggers can get out their calendars and plan their next trip to the beach. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has released the dates for proposed razor clam digs through the end of the year.

The announcement comes as the first dig of the season runs through Thursday night at Twin Harbors.

The next razor clam dig opens Satuday at four beaches. Twin Harbors will be open for four days of digging, while Kalaloch will be open for just one day.

Long Beach: Open Saturday through Monday

Twin Harbors: Open Saturday through Tuesday

Copalis: Open Saturday through Monday

Mocrocks: Open Saturday through Monday

Kalaloch: Open Monday only
