Longview man pleads guilty to fossil theft at Oregon’s John Day Fossil Beds National Monument

From the National Park Service:

On September 30th, David Wixon, a resident of Longview, Washington, pled guilty and was sentenced in federal court following his conviction for “depredation of federal property” for excavating and taking a fossilized oreodont skull from the park in 2007. Oreodonts lived 40 to 15 million years ago and are distantly related to present day camels. The sentencing was the result of a lengthy investigation by the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management and a subsequent plea agreement between the United States Attorney’s Office and Wixon.
