Couple who survived deadly Rainier storm getting married tomorrow in Whistler, B.C.

In the last line of a story I wrote last winter about a couple who survived a deadly storm on Mount Rainier, I shared a quote from Josephine Johnson of Lacey about her boyfriend of eight months.

“He is so amazing,” Johnson said of Jim Dickman, who lives in Vancouver, Wash. “I’m going to marry this man.”

Tomorrow she’ll make good on that promise when the couple plans to wed in Whistler, B.C. “Pique,” a Whistler news magazine, profiled the outdoor-lovers on its website yesterday, Valentine’s Day.

Mount Rainier board reviews winter fatalities, incidents

A number of Mount Rainier National Park and National Park Service staffers, plus commercial guides, are holding a board of review to look at the series of incidents earlier this winter.

Five people died on the mountain in December and January, and another three spent two nights after snowshoeing mishaps.

The board is expected to release a report with its findings and recommendations in about two weeks.

A painful, emotional month winds down at Mount Rainier National Park

Perhaps nobody will be more excited to turn the page on their calendar tonight than the staff at Mount Rainier National Park.

“I would say if there was one word to describe (how the staff is feeling) it would be ‘weary,’” said park volunteer and outreach manager Kevin Bacher. “I’ve heard so many people say, ‘I can’t wait for this winter to be over.’ ”

January has been one of the most tragic months in the 113-year history of the park, but it’s also had some incredible moments. But through the ups and downs it has been consistently emotional.
