State will allow ocean salmon anglers to keep hatchery and wild coho

Anglers will be allowed to retain both hatchery and wild coho salmon beginning Saturday in ocean waters off Westport (Marine Area 2) and beginning Mondayoff Ilwaco (Marine Area 1).

In addition, anglers fishing off Westport will be allowed to retain only one coho as part of their two-salmon daily limit beginning Saturday, while the coho catch limit in Ilwaco will remain two fish.

Those changes do not affect ocean salmon fisheries off LaPush (Marine Area 3) and Neah Bay (Marine Area 4), where anglers can continue to retain hatchery coho but must release wild coho, Pat Pattillo, salmon policy

Fishing report: Skokomish chinook attracting crowds

UPDATED AT 3:32 P.M.

I got this two calls after I had filed my report for Saturday’s paper, so I thought I would include them here.

Mineral Lake: People are catching rainbow and brown trout, fishing with worms and marshmallows off the bottom with a 6-foot leader, said Doreen Douglas at Mineral Lake Resort. The lake is warming up, so fish early or late in the day.

Fishing report: Saltwater action has been pretty good

UPDATED 2:31 P.M.

As I’m working on the fishing report for Saturday’s paper, here is some of what I’m hearing.

The saltwater action has been pretty good overall, from the ocean to Port Townsend and even off Tacoma.

Ilwaco/Westport: Anglers out of Ilwaco averaged .98 fish per person last week, the best of the season. Coho made up 62 percent of the catch. At Westport, anglers averaged .82 fish a person, with almost 75 percent of the fish caught being chinook, according to a state report. The weather, including high winds, made fishing tough.
