Fishing report: Good prospects for the weekend

Rivers

Cowlitz: The river has been slow to fair for summer-run steelhead in the Blue Creek area. Free drifting eggs from a boat has been most effective, but try back trolling baits or plugs when eggs are not working. The spring chinook action has been best at the barrier dam. Try using eggs and sand shrimp.

Green: People are catching a few steelhead and the water is in good shape. Floats and jigs or spinners are the most popular gear. Try No. 3 size spinners with a black blade and gold body or a gold blade and black body.

State will allow ocean salmon anglers to keep hatchery and wild coho

Anglers will be allowed to retain both hatchery and wild coho salmon beginning Saturday in ocean waters off Westport (Marine Area 2) and beginning Mondayoff Ilwaco (Marine Area 1).

Silver Lake (Pierce): The trout fishing has been good, especially before the sunshine hits the water. The trout have been cruising near the docks looking for small largemouth bass. The fishing

As I’m working on the fishing report for Saturday’s paper, here is some of what I’m hearing.

The saltwater action has been pretty good overall, from the ocean to Port Townsend and even off Tacoma.

Ilwaco/Westport: Anglers out of Ilwaco averaged .98 fish per person last week, the best of the season. Coho made up 62 percent of the catch. At Westport, anglers averaged .82 fish a person, with almost 75 percent of the fish caught being chinook, according to a state report. The weather, including high winds, made fishing tough. People are catching albacore
