Idaho wolf hunting tags now on sale

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has started selling wolf tags – $11.50 for resident hunters and $186 for nonresidents, vendor fees included.

Tags are available at license vendors and Fish and Game offices in Idaho. A valid 2011 Idaho hunting license is required to buy a tag.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service earlier today published the rule that removed wolves in Idaho from the endangered species list. The rule took effect upon publishing.

Gray wolves are now under state management and considered a big game animal.

Idaho has a new Fish and Game director

Here is some news from our neighbors to the east that will be of interest to some folks.

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission today promoted Virgil Moore making him the new director of that state’s Department of Fish and Game.

Here is the rest of the news release:

“Virgil is best equipped to maintain the positive momentum that is currently present at Idaho Fish and Game,” Commission Chairman Wayne Wright said. “He is a highly capable leader who is best able to implement the commission’s vision for the future.”

Sad news from Idaho, three die in chopper crash during flight to count salmon redds

UPDATED AT 3:55 P.M.

All three people in the Idaho helicopter crash have died.

The dead Idaho Fish and Game employees have been identified as Larry Barrett, 47 of Lewiston, who worked for the agency since 1985, and Dani Schiff, 34 of Lewiston, who worked for Fish and Game since 1997.

The name of the pilot has not yet been released.

The crash occurred behind the U.S. Forest Service building in Kamiah. The biologists were counting salmon redds – spawning nests – on the nearby Selway River. Fish and Game biologists have counted redds annually since the 1950s
