Olympic National Park fires still slowly burning

There has been little new fire activity as the Hopper fire continues burning on the east side of Olympic National Park. The fire is still creeping through downed logs and avalanche chutes on the east and west flanks of Mount Hopper. It has burned 385 acres since it was ignited by lightning Aug. 5. It is still considered just 15 percent contained.

The nine-person fuels crew monitoring the fire since Aug. 18 are expected to start hiking out Tuesday. Park fire officials will continue to monitor the Hopper fire by air.

As Hopper Fire burns, park sets up long-term monitoring gear

As of late Wednesday, the size of the Hopper fire is holding steady at 381 acres with 15 percent containment.

The Hopper fire is located on Mount Hopper on the east side of Olympic National Park, at the headwaters of the Crazy Creek Drainage and Skokomish River in the Olympic Wilderness, approximately 11 miles north of the Staircase area.

Second, smaller wildfire found at Olympic National Park while Hopper Fire grows slightly

The Hopper Fire in Olympic National Park grew slightly Tuesday and is now 381 acres. The fire is considered 15 percent contained.

Much of the fire activity Tuesday was primarily along the south flank of Mount Hopper and the ridge towards Mount Stone. The fire is burning through diverse vegetation including Subalpine and Douglas fir, two species that require fire for regeneration and propagation, said a park news release.

Olympic National Park officials close trails because of Hopper Fire

Here is the latest report from Olympic National Park fire management officials on the Hopper Fire:

The fire has grown in size to 325 acres.

As the fire moved down the south flank from Mount Hopper it moved closer to the Skokomish River Trail.

Due to the projected growth of the fire, the following trails are closed for visitor safety:

  • The Scout Lake way trail to St. Peter’s Gate at Mount Stone.
  • The way trail to Hagen Lake
  • The Mount Hopper Way trail.
  • The Skokomish River Trail from Nine Stream to the Duckabush/Home-Sweet-Home junction.
