Fishing: Good reports for trout and halibut

The return of spring chinook jacks counted at Bonneville Dam is on a near-record pace. Through May 9, a total of 18,032 spring chinook jacks had been counted at the dam. The record, since at least 1960, was 18,119 fish in 2009. That year, nearly 82,000 jacks were counted through June 15, the end of the spring chinook count at the dam, said Joe Hymer with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Fishing reports: Lakes warm, fishing improves

Lakes

Munn: The trout fishing has picked up. People still doing well with chironomids. Most people are fishing chironomid patterns under an indicator. Or try leeaches and woolly buggers in dark colors.

Rattlesnake: The trout fishing has been good to very good. Try leeches fished on an intermediate sinking line. Be willing to change the color of your fly, from olive to black to brown, until you find a color that is productive.

Tapps: The lake is producing a few smallmouth bass, but not in great numbers or size. The water temperatures have dropped, likely slowing the action. The fish

Fishing report: River anglers await forecasted rain

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that ran in today’s Sports section.

Saltwater

Fly fishing: Anglers are catching resident coho are not only in the Tacoma Narrows, but in Colvos and Hales passages, and even in Case Inlet. Look for jumping or fish breaking the surface. Baitfish and krill patterns have been best, including West’s Imitator, euphasiids and pink/white Clousers.

South Sound: The salmon fishing south of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge has been slow, in large part because of the less-than-ideal weather. Squid action has slowed down.

Fishing reports: Rivers are low and clear

Saltwater

North Sound: The salmon fishing remains good in the San Juan Islands, where some of the fish are reaching 25 pounds. A few fish are being caught off Hat Island and Columbia Beach. Action in Marine Area 9 has been fair, with some fish being caught since it opened Wednesday. There are a few spots left in the 100-boat field for 10th annual Roche Harbor Salmon Classic Feb. 7-8. Fishing report: Decent river action, lakes a little slow

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will appear in Saturday’s Sports section.

Rivers

Cowlitz: Anglers are catching mostly steelhead these. The best action has been around the trout hatchery. Fish close to the brush with small gear with current river conditions.

Lewis: Anglers are catching steelhead and some fall chinook, primarily from the North Fork around the salmon hatchery. Most of the chinook were released.

Olympic Coast: The steelhead action has been pretty good with the rivers in really good shape. The Hoh has been fishing as well as any other river in the area. There is
