Skiing icon Glen Plake to ski with public Thursday at Summit at Snoqualmie

Skiing legend Glen Plake and his iconic hair will ski Thursday at the Summit at Snoqualmie, the ski area announced today.

Skiers are invited to ski with the 48-year-old 5-9 p.m. Thursday at Summit West. Plake will teach them some freestyle tricks. Plake is partnered with Elan Skis, which is holding a ski demo in conjunction with the event.

“It’s always a great moment when Glen Plake comes to The Summit as he is one of skiing’s best, most enthusiastic ambassadors,” Summit marketing director Guy Lawrence said in a prepared statement. “Glen is always a huge attraction for our skiing

Summit West will open Saturday; other portions of Summit at Snoqualmie could open in the next week

The Summit at Snoqualmie will open its 2012/2013 ski season Saturday, ski area officials just announced. This latest winter storm has delivered 14 inches of snow in the last 24 hours, all that was needed to get the Summit West base area ready to operate.

“We’ve seen good snow accumulation on our higher slopes over the last two weeks and just needed a serious storm to deliver the goods at our base area elevation,” Summit marketing director Guy Lawrence said in prepared statement.

The Summit West base area will be open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Full-day lift

Skier, snowboarders thrilled to hear predictions of weak El Nino

As far as Northwest skiers and snowboarders are concerned it would be OK if they never saw La Nina’s brother.

They might not have a choice this winter, but forecasters say El Nino might not have the energy to live up to its dry personality anyway.

While the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center forecasted an El Nino weather system for this winter, NWS meteorologist Johnny Burg says that forecast now calls for a weak El Nino or perhaps a neutral winter.
