Fort Worden State Park management could be shared by Washington State Parks, Port Townsend Lifelong Learning Center

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission on Thursday directed staff to move forward with negotiating an agreement to co-manage Fort Worden State Park with the Port Townsend Lifelong Learning Center Public Development Authority (PDA).

The conversation regarding options for the optimal future management of Fort Worden State Park has been under way since 2004. The Commission in 2007 adopted a vision for Fort Worden as a center for life-long learning, a financially sustainable full-service destination providing a broad array of meaningful experiences for a diverse audience of visitors. State Parks considers transfer of Fort Worden to public development authority

The State Parks and Recreation Commission will consider a resolution Thursday that establishes the conditions under which it would be willing to transfer Fort Worden State Park to the Fort Worden Lifelong Learning Center Public Development Authority that would own and manage the park.

The resolution will be considered during the regular meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. Thursday, at the Labor and Industries Auditorium, 7273 Linderson Way S.W., Tumwater.

Fort Worden’s lower campground to close for sewer system work

The lower beach campground at Fort Worden State Park will be closed for almost six weeks starting Friday, while sewer improvements are made and a new comfort station is built.

A State Parks and Recreation news release said beach campsites 1 through 50 will be closed with an expected reopening on Nov. 17.

The comfort station in the lower beach campground will be closed through December. Visitors to the beach area will be able to use the restrooms in the Cablehouse Canteen or the upper campground comfort station until the new comfort station is completed in January. The park
