Lake Sammamish kokanee do not qualify for Endangered Species Act protection

After evaluating current available scientific information, the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service a short time ago announced that Lake Sammamish kokanee
salmon do not meet the criteria of a distinct population segment and
therefore, are not a listable entity under the Endangered Species Act.

The determination comes in response to a 2007 petition from a group of
conservation organizations and local and tribal governments concerned about
the decline of the kokanee population. In 2008, the Service published a
notice in the Federal Register indicating the petition

NOAA proposes listing smelt as threatened under the Endangered Species Act

NOAA’s Fisheries Service said earlier today it is listing Pacific smelt as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

The move should come as no surprise to anyone who has tried dipping for smelt in places like the Cowlitz River the last several years. The season has dwindled along with the runs to the point where there were just four days of recreational dipping allowed this year in just the Cowlitz.

A “threatened” species is in danger of becoming endangered in the foreseeable future. An “endangered” species is one in danger of extinction in all or part of its range.
