Connecticut school shooting stirs sad memories at Mount Rainier National Park

For Chuck Young, chief ranger at Mount Rainier National Park, tragedies like today’s elementary school shooting in Connecticut stir awful memories.

It was less than a year ago that his staff responded to a gunman in Mount Rainier National Park. When law enforcement ranger Margaret Anderson stopped the man, Benjamin Colton Barnes, on the morning of Jan. 1 she was shot and killed. Barnes fled into Rainier’s unforgiving wilderness where he was found dead, drowned in Paradise River, the next morning.

Some, including Young, believe Anderson’s actions may have prevented a Barnes from shooting park visitors at Paradise.

House passes bill to name Eatonville post office after Margaret Anderson

The U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday passed legislation that would name the Eatonville post office after slain Mount Rainier ranger Margaret Anderson.

The bill, H.R. 5788, would name the post office National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson Post Office. The measure awaits action in the Senate.

The legislation was sponsored by Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Auburn) to honor Anderson who was shot and killed Jan. 1 while on duty at Mount Rainier National Park. Eric Anderson, husband of slain Rainier ranger, announced as National Park Service’s new fire training specialist

Eric Anderson, husband of slain Rainier ranger Margaret Anderson, was announced this morning as the new structural fire training specialist for the National Interagency Fire Center.

The News Tribune first reported on May 14 that Anderson would receive this position in Boise.

“I feel honored to be working with such a capable and dedicated staff in the NPS Division of Fire and Aviation,” Anderson said in a prepared statement. “I’m looking forward to contributing my energy and love of firefighting towards the goal of ensuring the safety of our employees and visitors, while protecting our historical treasures.”

Associated Ministries plans service for slain Rainier ranger Margaret Anderson

Associated Ministries will hold a short service in honor of slain ranger Margaret Anderson on March 3 at Mount Rainier National Park.

Anderson was shot near Paradise on Jan. 1 after setting up a road block to stop a motorist who ran snow tire checkpoint. The shooter fled and was found dead in Paradise River the next morning.

The service will be at 1 p.m. at the northeast side of the Paradise Visitor Center. Associated Ministries attempts to conduct “Moments of Blessings” at the sites of all homicides in Pierce County, said spokeswoman Sandy Windley.
