Mount Rainier National Park finds new deputy superintendent in South Carolina

Tracy Swartout, a National Park Service veteran from South Carolina, was announced Tuesday as the new deputy superintendent at Mount Rainier National Park.

Swartout, currently the superintendent of Congaree National Park in South Carolina, will begin work at Mount Rainier on Sept. 2.

“Tracy offers an outstanding blend of management, leadership, business planning and interpersonal abilities that will greatly benefit Mount Rainier,” Mount Rainier superintendent Randy King said in a prepared statement. “I very much look forward to working with her.”

Rangers rescue trapped horse at Maine’s Acadia National Park

From the National Park Service:

Operators of the Wildwood Stables discovered early Thursday morning, May 24th, that their 12-year-old Belgian Suffolk Cross, a horse named Duke, had broken through the barn floor sometime that morning or the night before. The 2,000-pound draft horse was discovered flailing with only his head and front legs above floor level. The horse’s body was collapsed into a section of the four-and-a-half foot crawl space that was surrounded by concrete walls.
