Ahtanum Campground reopens at 5 p.m. Thursday

The state Department of Natural Resources just announced it will reopen Ahtanum Meadows and Ahtanum Campground at 5 p.m. on Thursday. They will be accessible by the North Fork Ahtanum Road.

The sites were temporarily closed a week ago to assist with fire suppression efforts at the Diamond Butte Fire.

The Middle Fork Road, which accesses Tree Phones Campground and Whites Ridge Trailhead, will continue to be closed during the week, but will reopen from 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday at 8 p.m. It will be closed on Labor Day.

DNR: Discover Pass reopens Snow Cabin Campground

The Washington Department of Natural Resources announced today the reopening Snow Cabin Campground in Ahtahum State Forest near Yakima. The DNR says the new Discover Pass is the reason for the reopening.

Here’s the statement from the DNR:

One month after the state launched the Discover Pass on July 1, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reopened Snow Cabin Campground in the Ahtanum State Forest. DNR closed the campground in 2009 after experiencing a nearly 50-percent cut to its recreation funding. Fish and Wildlife Commission opposes SB 6813

The state Fish and Wildlife Commission this afternoon issued a statement opposing Senate Bill 6813.

The bill would transfer natural resources management duties currently managed by Fish and Wildlife and Parks and Recreation to the Department of Natural Resources. The bill is scheduled for public hearing in the Senate Natural Resources committee Wednesday at 8 a.m.
