Nick Hall: Honored at memorial service; recovery efforts on hold until Monday

More than 250 family, friends, coworkers and members of the climbing community gathered this morning to bid farewell to Nick Hall, the Mount Rainier climbing ranger who died June 21 during a rescue of four climbers who had fallen into a crevasse.

In a ceremony that blended a military-style formality with the informal remembrances from a brother and a friend, Hall was remembered for his passion for the outdoors, his quiet intensity and his remarkable climbing and rescue skills.

Nick Hall: Best weather window coming Wednesday

Today could provide the break in the weather that will allow Mount Rainier National Park climbing rangers to recover the body of co-worker Nick Hall.

The National Weather Service forecast for the north side of the mountain calls for mostly sunny skies, with west winds around 6 mph. Temperatures are expected to reach 55 degrees, which could add to the danger of falling rock and ice. By tonight, clouds will start to build again.

By Thursday, the forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of snow after 11 a.m.
