National Park Service will make changes based on review of the death of Mount Rainier climbing ranger Nick Hall


Read the National Park Service Report on accident that led to the death of Nick Hall.  

 

An pervasive level of comfort among climbing rangers working in dangerous conditions on Mount Rainier might have been a factor in the death of Nick Hall almost a year ago.

That is was one of the findings issued by a National Park Service board of review convened after the June 21, 2012, death of the 33-year-old climbing ranger.

Hall was one of four rangers rescuing four climbers from Texas. Each ranger was assisting a different climber when an Army Reserve Chinook

Karen Taylor-Goodrich named new superintendent of North Cascades National Park complex

Karen Taylor-Goodrich has been named the new superintendent of North Cascades National Park Service Complex. She will start her new duties in March.

Taylor-Goodrich has been the superintendent at Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks in California for the last three years. She fills the vacancy created when Chip Jenkins left the park last year to become the National Park Service Pacific West’s deputy regional director in Seattle.

Her career of more than 30 years with the Park Service included a stint at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area.

Board of review releases findings after review of Margaret Anderson shooting

The National Park Service today released the recommendations made by a board of review the investigated the circumstances surrounding the murder of law enforcement ranger Margaret Anderson on Jan. 1.

Among the board’s findings was that Benjamin Barnes came to Mount Rainier National Park well-armed and prepared to harm people.

The board also praised “the well-executed response” by park staff, volunteers and partner agencies to the shooting and identified some lessons learned that might help prepare law enforcement staff for similar incidents in the future.
