Big cuts coming to Mount Rainier National Park this summer

Here’s a statement from Mount Rainier National Park outlining what cuts it must make after having it’s operating budget reduced by $603,000.:

 

Mount Rainier’s annual budget last year (in FY12) was $12.08M. This included funding administered by Mount Rainier for human resources and resource Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) programs supporting many national parks in the Pacific Northwest, leaving $11.35M for Mount Rainier operations. From this budget, the park is eliminating $603,000 in planned FY13 expenses to meet the five percent mandated sequestration cuts, resulting in $10.75M available for the year. Road to Carbon River entrance at Mount Rainier to be closed two days next week

Folks who are planning to travel to the Carbon River corner of Mount Rainier National Park should be aware of a road closure next week.

Fairfax Forest Reserve Road East that leads to the Carbon River entrance will be closed to through traffic for two days to repair a sinkhole.

The closure will begin at 6 a.m. on Monday. The road is scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. on Wednesday. The closure will occur at milepost 2.5 near the old town site of Fairfax. Local and emergency vehicle access will be maintained.
